3 Little Dickies

Posted by ismismism on August 13, 2009 in Uncategorized

A couple months ago, I worked with Christian and Adrian on a Dickies commercial. The company asked for a “jump blues” tune, so we whipped something up in a few days in my basement. Adrian played drums and piano, Christian played horns, and I played bass with a vinyl cleaning brush crammed under the strings to make it sound more like a standup. Andy Thompson waved his magic wand to get the perfect mix, and here it is:

It’s weird to me that I was essentially hired to replicate the sound of a real guy’s band, without hearing that band or knowing much about them. Then that real band is shown on the screen with my music playing behind it. Just weird, that’s all.

I wonder what that band actually sounds like.

Let’s PLAY

I know that posts about web updates are unrivaled in their boringness, but that won’t stop me from writing this post.
I’ve added some meat to the “Play” button, which until recently just went directly to the Pop Project site. Now it’s a complete list of every release I’ve been involved with. It’s been surprisingly tough [...]

The Cackle Sisters

Posted by ismismism on March 23, 2009 in Uncategorized

After seeing the one-time performance of the Oblesons (Adrian Robles, Christian Doble and I doing old timey three part harmonies at 826’s Love Hangover show), Ian Saylor suggested I check out an old timely duo called the Cackle Sisters.
I found some recordings, and Holy Shit.
The real life DeZurik sisters (known as the Cackle Sisters) yodel [...]

Raphael Saadiq at City Theatre

Posted by ismismism on March 18, 2009 in Uncategorized

Back in college, I copied the Tony! Toni! Tone! tracks “Put Your Head on My Pillow” and “Thinking of You” from my roommate and enjoyed those smooth grooves for years without ever investigating further.  I also thought that the Raphael Saadiq-produced tune “Show Me the Way to Your Heart” on Earth Wind and Fire’s 2005 [...]

Tis the Season

Since I’ve been getting my blog bug out at the Suburban Sprawl blog these days, there hasn’t been much reason for me to post here.  However, this is a good forum for self-indulgence, and I thought it’d be fun to celebrate this year’s Suburan Sprawl holiday comp by listing all the different holiday songs I’ve recorded [...]

The Life of Telemarketers

Posted by ismismism on August 12, 2008 in Uncategorized

I receive a lot of annoying sales calls at work, and I generally just don’t answer them.  Today I was left an accidental message by someone who apparently thought they had hung up.  I could only hear one side of the conversation, but this is what it said.

[Background noise of another speakerphone ringing endlessly and a [...]

What a homeown

Posted by ismismism on July 15, 2008 in Uncategorized

Since I haven’t told anyone about the existence of this blog yet, I’m guessing you didn’t notice that I’m returning from a two week vacation.  I had the time off work, and I consequently spent refreshingly little time on the internet (and a disappointing amount of time in front of daytime television).

One major thing [...]

Downtown Detroit one day, open farmland the next

I’ve been tied down and tickled by gremlins all week, so I couldn’t post about my weekend until now.

FRIDAY: Suburban Sprawl Summer of Fun IV @ Alvin’s

It’s been already reported here, but let me say that Sea of Japan were much tighter than I was expecting on Friday.  After only five practices, they sounded like they [...]

Why Blogger?

Posted by ismismism on June 17, 2008 in Uncategorized

I know what you’re thinking:
“Oh great, another blog.  From a real person, not even a gimick like a blog from a pet or an inanimate object.  At least that might be funny for one post.  This is just more mindless chatter to collect spam comments.”
And you’re probably right.  Entering the blogosphere right now feels like [...]
